Valley Christian closes in on berth in Division VII baseball final
Valley Christian Academy defeated Lodi-Elliot Christian 4-3 in the opener of their best-of-three series Saturday and moved within one win of advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII championship game.
The Lions (21-6), shooting for their fourth section banner in five years, scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning at McAuliffe Memorial Ballparks in Sacramento and survived a three-run fifth to record their 17th consecutive victory.
All four runs came with two outs, including a bases-loaded, two-run single up the middle by Levi Hagerty.
Jeremiah Moore pitched a five-hitter walked two and struck out eight. He also drove in a run. Hagerty went 2 for 3, and Teagan Mowry doubled.
Game two is scheduled for Tuesday. The championship is scheduled for Monday at a time and place to be announced.
Sophomore Devin Lehman broke a tie with a single, and Granite Bay held on to beat McClatchy 4-3 in game one of their best-of-three semifinal series Saturday at American River College. Game two is scheduled for Tuesday.
The Grizzlies beat Del Campo 11-3 Friday in their playoff opener.
Woodcreek heads into the second game of its series against Rocklin trailing 1-0 after hitting eight batters and losing the opener 9-0. The teams meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at American River.
The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Sacramento City College.
Woodcreek lacrosse players Brandon Carter, Clay Crowley, David Edgar and Brandon Knapp played for a Central Valley team in a Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association All-Star game Saturday on Treasure Island in San Francisco.
The locals played for the Blue team, which lost to the Gold team from the Bay Area 12-8.
Carter was double teamed after winning the opening faceoff. He drove toward the goal and passed to Knapp, who scored a goal.
