Valley Christian basketball floors it early, cruises late

Valley Christian Academy outscored Elk Grove-Lutheran 32-11 in the first quarter and cruised to a 78-45 Sacramento Metro Athletic League victory Friday night at home.

Freshman Micah Gunter led the Lions (17-6 overall, 10-0 SMAL) with 21 points, and senior Jason Gish scored 19.

Senior Josh Flanagan scored 12 points for the Lions, who finish the regular season Friday night against Faith Christian in Yuba City.

Valley Christian, which took a 14-game win streak into Tuesday night’s game at Sacramento Adventist, remained No. 6 in the final Sac-Joaquin Section Division V power ratings Monday and will learn its playoff opponent Sunday.


Valley Christian 61, Elk Grove-Lutheran 32 — Sophomore Grace Magni scored a game-high 24 points, and the Lady Lions (10-12, 8-2 SMAL) used a 24-8 run in the second quarter to open a 34-11 halftime lead. Freshman Erika Lyons scored 11 points for Valley Christian, which is seeded fifth in the Division VI power ratings.

Granite Bay 55, Roseville 33 — The Grizzlies led 36-19 at halftime and cruised to a victory. Granite Bay’s Aiden Naughton scored 19 of his game-high 20 points in the first half while Matt Tawlks led the Tigers with nine.

Woodcreek 63, Rocklin 41 – It was Woodcreek all day, as the Timberwolves built a large lead and held the Thunder in check.
