Championships are very common for the Silverado Middle School wrestling team. This year’s squad recently completed its third straight Foothill Intermediate School Athletic League title season with a 13-0 campaign. The Bears capped the season with a fourth consecutive Placer/Nevada County Championship tournament title in the event contested at Antelope High School. Individual county champions for the team were James Gomez, Clay Shropshire and Charlie Ridgeway. Second-place finishers were Chad Merigold, Jordan Jensen, Cameron Young, Chase Verneuille, Andrew Zumaran, Alex Silberstien, Mitchell Houston and Austin McCarty. Jacob Robertson placed fourth in the tournament. That group all qualified for the NorCal Region Championships which were contested Saturday at Del Oro High in Loomis. The team was led by an outstanding group of eighth-grade leaders that also included Brandon Roberts and Wyatt Shurtz. “This was, top to bottom, the strongest lineup that Silverado has ever put on the mats,” said coach Rick Grantham. The team was coached by Grantham along with Pete Santos, Alan Jensen and James Gomez Sr.
