Tyller’s dunk gives Valley Christian a spark
Valley Christian Academy defeated Faith Christian 68-55 in a Sacramento Metro Athletic League boys basketball game Friday night in Yuba City.
The Lions (16-3, 5-0 SMAL) took a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter against Faith Christian (14-5, 2-2) and received a spark from Jeremy Tyller, who shook the rim with a slam dunk with 4:30 remaining.
“From that point on, we were able to execute well enough to come out of there with a W,” Valley Christian coach Brad Gunter Jr. said.
Officials called 55 fouls, which led to 73 free-throw attempts.
Center Jesse Peters got into foul trouble, but the Lions’ reserve big men totaled 28 rebounds. Tyller had a double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, Greg Ellis grabbed 11 rebounds, and Aaron Perchaz had 10.
Valley Christian was 20 for 66 from the field, including 5 for 21 on three-point attempts, and 23 for 40 from the line.
Jason Gish led Valley Christian with 20 points. He also had six rebounds and four steals. Joey Parker had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. The Lions totaled 56 rebounds, 12 steals and 11 assists.
Woodcreek 60, Granite Bay 16 – The Timberwolves (13-7, 2-1 SFL) rebounded from their loss at Nevada Union by playing outstanding defense against the Grizzlies (1-17, 0-3), according to coach Raymond Beck, and led 17-1 after the first quarter.
A crowd of 1,100 attended the Pink Zone game to benefit breast cancer awareness.
“We were thrilled with the turnout and the spirit,” said Mark O’Hair, administrator in charge of Woodcreek athletics/boosters.
Woodcreek attacked the basket and went 18 for 23 from the free-throw line. Fia Hoskinson led the Timberwolves with 14 points, and Joleen Chanco scored 11.
The Timberwolves play at Del Oro on Wednesday night in a key SFL game.
Del Oro 66, Roseville 24 – The Tigers (4-15, 0-3 SFL) went scoreless in the first quarter and fell behind the Golden Eagles (15-3, 3-0) 24-0. Lolly Fitzpatrick led Roseville with eight points.
Bella Vista 70, Oakmont 41 – Leading by two at halftime, the Vikings (13-7, 0-2 CVC) were outscored 48-17 by the Broncos (13-4, 3-0) in the second half. Oakmont’s Shelby Kelch led all scorers with 21 points.
Leah Parrish (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Jennifer Johnson (13 points, 15 rebounds) posted double doubles for Bella Vista, and Parrish had seven steals.
Granite Bay 73, Roseville 50 – Anthony Pedersen scored 17 points, and Sherron Bradford had 15 points and eight rebounds as the Grizzlies defeated the Tigers. Daniel Romero scored 11 points and Jacob King nine for Granite Bay.
Chase Pedone grabbed seven rebounds, Griffin Powers six, and Pedersen, King, Aiden Naughton and Cevin Meador each had five.
The Grizzlies led 16-5 after one quarter and closed with a 17-7 advantage in the fourth.
