A pair of Placer runs were the key in Saturday’s 54-30 win by the Hillmen over Roseville in the Antelope Titan Holiday Hoop Classic championship game. After a 12-0 Placer surge in the second quarter put the Hillmen up 20-9, the Tigers responded with a seven-point sequence of their own to pull within four points. Before Roseville could completely get over the top, a 17-0 Placer run to open the third quarter put the contest out of reach. “We came out and played really well at the start,” said Roseville coach Greg Granucci. “That first run hurt us a little bit but we kept our composure and clawed back, but the second one killed us.” The Tigers could not stop the Placer transition game in the second half as the Hillmen rolled to the victory going away. Nick Schwyzer scored eight points to lead Roseville, while Tony Costa dropped in seven. Schwyzer and Matt Hack earned all-tournament team honors. Darren Centi had 12 points to lead Placer and tournament MVP Michael Jensen scored nine. Roseville’s next action will come against the host team in the Mesa Verde tournament Thursday.
