Top-seeded Oakmont rolls on to UC Davis and into Division III section volleyball finalBy: Robbie Enos
Oakmont High School’s girls volleyball team is rollin’ like the stone Bob Dylan sung about.
The now 33-2 Vikings swept El Dorado 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship against Vista del Lago on Thursday at UC Davis.
“We’re just gonna make sure we make adjustments when need be,” Oakmont head coach Shelby Weinberger said. “We’re going to enjoy the win for (Tuesday night) and work (Wednesday).”
It was business as usual in the first set, when the Vikings rolled to an 8-2 lead. El Dorado closed to 19-15 before Oakmont scored six consecutive points on the serving of Kyra Rogers, who had two aces to go with six digs and four kills.
Tied 14-14 in the second set, senior captain and net monster Katie Carte willed Oakmont to a win with four kills. She had six more kills and an ace in the final set and finished with 12 kills and eight digs. Brennah Gladwill had 15 assists and 11 digs.
“I was impressed with the heart of the girls,” Weinberger said. “We knew this was going to be the toughest match so far in the playoffs. The girls knew that they had to leave everything they had on the court. They did a phenomenal job.”
Destiny awaits the Vikings on Thursday. Weinberger said she wasn’t familiar with either team and had yet to configure a game plan for either squad. But she knew what the team needed to do to win.
“We need to just focus on the basics,” Weinberger said. “We need to fine-tune those things. Have different options, combat blockers, stuff like that. Just basics.”
