The members of Rocklin-based teen Christian rock group The Resistance have been playing together for the past seven years, performing at venues and events of all sizes.
The band comprises Megan Harriman on vocals, Brennan Stewart on guitar, Aaron Gugino on bass and Anton Gugino on drums.
“We started the band at a birthday party,” Aaron said. “At first we were a cover band, and then we started writing our own songs. Megan and Brennan joined about four years ago, and we got pretty serious. It kind of exploded.”
On songwriting, Morgan explained, “The boys will usually come up with some instrumental thing, and I’ll have a song that I’ve written to go with it. I write from experience, and I try to relate with what other people are going through. I’ll try to match what the boys are playing, and it usually works out pretty well.”
Since its inception, the band has played at venues as big as Power Balance Pavilion for the Sacramento Kings, as well as Raley Field for the River Cats. They have also played a variety of charity shows and benefits.
“We’ll be playing for the Golden State Warriors on Dec. 1 of this year, and in January we’ll be playing for the San Francisco Bulls at Cow Palace,” said Mike Gugino, former band member turned manager, and father of Aaron and Anton Gugino. “Every artist that plays there gets to sign the wall. We’ll get to have our name up there with artists like the Beatles, so we’re pretty excited about that.”
The band has recently signed on with Jason Hoard, Dove Award-winning producer and the touring guitarist for multi-platinum-selling Christian rock band Third Day, to record their first full-length album.
“I met Jason backstage when the band Third Day came and played at Adventure Church,” Mike said. “We struck up a relationship even prior to him knowing that we were a band. “Finally, I asked him if he listens to new bands, and he just happens to do that as part of what he does musically, so we gave him a CD. Surprisingly, as big as he is in the music industry, he listened to the CD on his way back to Atlanta, shot us an email back and told us he’d like to work with us.”
Hoard will fly back to California from his home in Georgia to work directly with the band. To raise funds for the album, the band is putting on a kickstarter concert.
“It’s a fundraiser, and it’s on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Adventure Auditorium,” Aaron said. “It’s only $5 at the door to get in. There will be four artists, including us, and the funds we raise will be going toward recording the new album that we have coming up.”
“According to Jason Hoard, we’re going to have the album finished and ready for duplication in the spring of 2013, and ready for the spring push,” Mike said. “So it’s possible that we’ll be touring by sometime this summer. We hope that people will come down and support the cause.”
