SureWest defeated the City of Roseville 14-6 in the championship game of the coed softball competition at the South Placer Corporate Games Saturday at Mahany Park in Roseville. The Corporate Games is an annual event designed to provide team building to organizations throughout the region as companies participate in both sporting and non-sporting events against other business entities. In the softball event, SureWest jumped out to a 10-2 advantage after two innings and never looked back. The victory allowed the winners to creep closer to the City of Roseville in the gold division of the competition. The event is broken into divisions based on company size, with businesses of 100 or more employees battling in the gold division, those with 26 to 99 employees fighting for the silver division title, while smaller entities face off in the bronze division. Participation is limited to employees and their spouses. Mark Wise of SureWest went four for four in the championship game, and finished with a .642 batting average, with a homerun, a triple and seven RBI in his three games. Josie Smith and Chris Thomas each added three hits to the winning total. For City of Roseville, Phil McAvoy, who went nine for 10 in the tourney, was three for four in the finale, and both Kevin Melin and Brenda Bunnell contributed a pair of hits. Basic Urban Kitchen claimed third place in coed softball, edging Williams and Paddon 9-8, after scoring three runs in its final at bat. Tim Casey was three for three for the winners. The win allowed Basic to momentarily claim the top spot in the silver division, before Rocklin Recreation and Placer County Chaplaincy jumped back on top with strong finishes in Sunday’s bowling event. For Williams and Paddon, currently in fourth place in the silver division, Sharon Strickland has three hits, while Stu Grinstain and Will Sandusky each added a pair of hits and two RBI. The overall competition has now passed the halfway point, and the next events include miniature golf, iron chef BBQ, and golf. Complete results, photos and highlights can be found at the Web site -
