Jeff Bailey shows off the interior of a two-bedroom, one-bathroom house with vaulted ceilings, recessed lighting, a high-efficiency toilet and other features.

"This is 100 percent student work," Bailey says proudly. "They did it all."

Students in Roseville High School's Geometry in Construction program constructed the 656-square-foot modular house on campus last year. The house is now for sale, and the school needs a buyer.

"We don't have the money to run next year's program without selling this (house)," says Bailey, an industrial technology instructor who co-teaches the course.

Roseville Joint Union High School District is selling the unit through a closed-bid process, which opened Friday, Aug. 3, and goes through 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. The house is being sold "as-is/where-is," which means the buyer assumes responsibility for moving the building, and completing any site work needed to ensure occupancy.

The house meets all standards and building codes, according to Bailey, but lacks flooring and appliances. He calls the structure an "enormously efficient little guy." More than 20 industry professionals supervised the students in constructing the house.

Bailey says he's hoping to get a "fair price," which he considers at least $40 a foot, or about $27,000 total. This is how much the Geometry in Construction program costs to run. Last year, Bailey and geometry teacher Tyson Maytanes solicited donations and developed partnerships to cover costs. Money from the sale allows the program to become self-sustaining.

Geometry in Construction is a geometry-and-shop-class-in-one, and the first of its kind in California. Students spend one day in the classroom learning math and the next day outside building the structure. Eighty students are enrolled for the program this fall.

Bailey said last year's young builders showed pride in their final creation.

"The neat thing is when the students bring their friends and parents and show what they've done," he said.
