The first and fourth quarters were key as the Roseville High girls basketball team knocked off Chico Thursday at the Whitney Wildcat Invitational tournament in Rocklin. The Tigers won the first period 12-5 and the final stanza 18-9 while earning a 44-38 victory over the visitors from Chico. Center Katie Simon was big both inside and out for Roseville as she drained 3-of-4 three-point shots and 9-of-15 overall on her way to a 24 point night. The senior, who has signed on to play her college hoops at Nebraska next year, also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots for Roseville. After owning the first period by a 12-5 count, the Tigers were outscored 24-13 over the second and third quarters before finding their shooting touch in the final eight minutes. Point guard Raina Loya scored 11 points and handed out six assists for Roseville and Kayla Granucci, who struggled with her shot, also ripped down six boards for the Tigers. A date with El Dorado awaits Roseville at 6:45 p.m. Friday night in the gym at Whitney High. The tournament semifinal will identify one of the two finalists that will advance to Saturday’s 4 p.m. title game. The other finalist will be the winner of Friday’s Woodcreek/Whitney battle.
