While Jordan Hasay of Mission College Prep ran to the top national mark in the 3,200-meter final on Saturday, Granite Bay sophomore Brooke Holt took full advantage of the fast pace, running to her personal record and a 17th-place finish at the state track meet. With family and friends in the stadium at Clovis’ Buchanan High School, the state final was most special for Granite Bay distance coach, Randy Sturgeon, who was coaching his final meet after a 33-year coaching career. Sturgeon is retiring after a long run. “I want to thank Brooke for getting me to the state meet for my finale,” Sturgeon said. “She is a fine young lady and I am honored that she calls me her coach.” Sturgeon enjoyed Holt’s final run, but leaves confident that her best is yet to come. “Her goal next year is to break 10:30 and if she can improve her 1,600 and 800 times next season I am confident she can do that,” Sturgeon said. “The race really opened her eyes to what can be in the future.”
