Oakmont High School’s Jake Elliott wrestled his way to a state championship Saturday night.

Elliott defeated Jesse Baldazo of Brentwood-Liberty 4-2 in the 145-pound final at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. Elliott capped his season with a 39-1 record.

Elliott was the lone wrestler among 10 local qualifiers for the CIF State Championships on Friday to advance to the semifinals. He advanced to the championship by defeating Hayden Scharbrough of Glendora 10-5.

Elliott won his first three matches Friday, defeating Zach Mitchell of Temecula Valley on a 12-2 major decision, Brenton Visnoski of Huntington Beach-Edison 3-0 and Devin Poindexter of Clovis North by decision in the quarterfinals.

Three of Granite Bay’s five state qualifiers were eliminated Friday, and heavyweight Gavin Andrews didn’t compete because of an injured knee. Andrews placed fifth in the state last year.
