Sports safety, speed training camps offered in Roseville, Auburn

Safe Kids Placer County will hold two youth sports safety clinics and three speed training camps as part of Safe Kids Week. All are free.

The safety clinics are scheduled for Monday, April 23, at Martha Riley Library, 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd., in Roseville and Tuesday, April 24, in the Nobli Room at the Placer County Office of Education, 365 Nevada St., in Auburn. Each will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. and are free to attend.

The safety clinics will be run by registered nurse Vicki Wolf, the Roseville Fire Department and Anthony Prior, a longtime pro football player and owner of Ocean Speed in Southern California. They’ll cover concussion prevention and detection, pre-participation exams, proper hydration, acute and overuse injury prevention techniques and sports safety equipment.

Prior will conduct the speed training camps. The first is scheduled for Sunday, April 22, at Royer Park in Roseville. The first session, for ages 12 and under, begins at 1 p.m. with an optional Part 2 at 2 p.m. The second session, for ages 13 and up, starts at 3:30 p.m. with an optional Part 2 at 4:30.

A third session, for ages 14 and under, is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, on the soccer field at Regional Park in Auburn. An optional Part 2 follows at 6:30.

Prior will cover the fundamentals and mechanics of speed, technique and form. He holds the 40-yard dash record at Washington State at 4.21 seconds and played 11 years in the NFL and CFL.
