Oops, Sunday is Mother’s Day and you totally forgot. Poor mom. But, wait, have no fear — we have some last-minute ideas for fun times you and your mom can share this weekend. If mom likes strawberry shortcake Beg mom to compete in the strawberry shortcake-eating contest at the Strawberry Festival. No hands allowed! Once mom has made a mess of herself, treat her to the rest of the festivities. Local farmers will hawk their certified-organic fruit and mom can sample strawberry pizza, strawberry kettle corn, strawberry cookies, strawberry tamales and much more. Mom can also check out the classic car show and Miss Strawberry Pageant, while the kids are busy at the petting zoo and pony rides. That might also be the right time for mom to sip a strawberry margarita. The Strawberry Festival goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday at 800 All America City Blvd. in Roseville. Kids 11 and under are free, general admission is $8 and seniors 60 and over are $5. For more information, visit www.feedmestrawberries.com. If mom likes fashion You may not have time or money to buy mom new clothes, but you can treat her to a free fashion show today at the Fountains. Six boutiques, including SAWK, Crush, MBMB, Serendipity, Bellybou, Posh Punkins and Lucy will come together to display their goodies. During the event, Alice Runnels will receive a Mother’s Day Makeover. Runnels was nominated by her daughter, Lisa Runnels-Shelton. The fashion show starts at 2 p.m. in the Orvis courtyard at the Fountains, Roseville Parkway and Galleria Blvd. Gifts for moms while supplies last. Why not treat her to a masterpiece during the free Loomis Art Loop studio tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Eleven artists will be displaying and selling their paintings, jewelry, clay sculpture, porcelain and photography. Best of all, mom will get to pick out her Mother’s Day gift. Visit www.loomisartloop.com for details and a map. If mom likes wine Take mom on a wine tour through the vineyards of Auburn and Newcastle. Placer County wines recently won 10 awards at the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition. Visit six participating wineries and taste the winners and enjoy special Mother’s Day activities. Participating wineries include: Baumbach Winery, Dono Dal Cielo, Fawnridge Winery, Lone Buffalo Vineyards, Mt. Vernon Winery and Vina Castellano Winery. No appointment needed. If mom likes gardens If mom enjoys walking through beautiful gardens as they bloom for spring, take her on Placer County Master Gardeners’ 25th annual Mother’s Day Garden Tour Sunday. The tour visits six gardens throughout Placer County. Vegetables, perennials, fish ponds, oh my! One stop includes a garden that began 100 years ago. The garden tour takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 9. Tickets are $10 and children under 12 get in free. Pick up a ticket and map at Sierra Nursery, 3985 Douglas Blvd. in Roseville or at Green Acres Nursery and Supply, 901 Galleria Blvd. in Roseville. If mom likes race cars You know mom has a hidden thirst for speed. Take her to the All American Speedway tonight. Every mom at the track will be presented with a flower. Event organizers will recognize the mother with the most kids, the most grandkids and the oldest mother in the crowd. Tonight’s event features a NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Series fight championship race. Also racing will be Modifed, Street Stocks, Bombers and NCMA Sprint Cars. The Speedway will also offer a Family Pizza Deal that includes a pizza and four sodas for $20. Gates open at 4 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m. All American Speedway is located at 800 All America City Blvd. in Roseville. For more information, visit www.allamericanspeedway.com. If mom likes kids Of course, mom loves you. But if she has a fondness for other children, treat her to teeth-whitening at Fountains Dental Excellence. Proceeds for the procedure go to Acres of Hope in Applegate and Smiles For Life Foundation, to be distributed to seriously ill, disabled or underprivileged children here in Roseville and around the world. When you pay for mom’s teeth-whitening, you write your check directly to the Smiles For Life Foundation, not to Fountains Dental Excellence. Fountains Dental Excellence is located at 1186 Roseville Parkway, Suite 120. For more information, visit www.fountainsdentalexcellence.com. ---------- During the Mother’s Day fashion show at the Fountains today, Alice Runnels will receive a free makeover. Runnels was nominated by her daughter, Lisa Runnels-Shelto. Here’s an excerpt from her nominating letter: “Alice’s father passed away from cancer when she was 9 years old. She took over as the family matriarch and since her mother could not speak English, my mother was her voice. At age 19, my mother married my father but remained a constant in my grandmother’s life all while raising my two brothers and me. She chose not to work and focused on raising us; driving us to little league practice, basketball games and horseback riding lessons. She not only drove us but also our friends. Later in life, my mother went to work as an activity director, where she has continued helping others. My mother works very hard and often works 10-12 hour days. She will be turning 65 this year and is considering retiring next year. If you met my mother, you would never know that she is in such severe pain from arthritis. This makeover could be the first step in a new life for her.”
