An undefeated run through the league schedule combined with second straight Division VII baseball title is sure to earn a team serious postseason accolades, and such is true for the 2009 edition of the Valley Christian Academy baseball team. With co-coach of the year Brad Gunter at the helm, the Lions locked down all of the significant honors in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League. Grabbing the headlines are the league’s co-MVPs, Ryan Cordell and David Risucci, the two lynchpins in Gunter’s D7 dynasty in the making. Cordell, a junior pitcher and shortstop was the staff ace all year long, and was most impressive in taking the ball whenever VCA stepped up its level of competition beyond the SMAL. “His numbers overall speak for themselves,” Gunter said. “He has received looks from multiple colleges. He was not only our big game pitcher, but also our huge bat in crucial games.” Cordell was 9-2, with a 1.13 ERA in 62 innings on the bump. He allowed just 50 hits and struck out 98, while walking just 13 hitters. Offensively, he was menace to the opposing hurler, with a .472 average, five home runs, 13 doubles and 38 RBIs. Risucci, the Lions’ catcher and No. 2 starting pitcher, was also the team’s leadoff hitter and sparkplug. “Risucci had to pitch and catch for us this season,” Gunter said. “He was 7-2 on the mound with a mid 3’s ERA. He hit in the upper .300s for us and was the catalyst to the scoring and leadership on our team.” Valley Christian placed two other players on the first team, as infielders Donovan Allen and Junior Casas were rewarded for their outstanding seasons.
