Six Grizzlies move on to state track finals

Oakmont, Woodcreek athletes also qualify

Editors note: When we first published this story late Friday, we missed one state qualifier. That has been fixed in this version to make note that Woodcreek's Kayla Kamaka hit on the at-large pole vault height for an automatic trip to state, despite finishing outside the top three. -KJ The big winners locally in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters track and field finals Thursday and Friday at Hughes Stadium on campus at Sacramento City College were the Grizzlies of Granite Bay High. With a dominating performance in the field events and impressive work in the distance runs, Granite Bay qualified six athletes for the trip to the state meet next Thursday and Friday in Clovis. The top three in each section final - plus any athletes who exceed a minimum state qualifying at-large time, height or distance - got their ticket punched for the state meet. With a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches, Granite Bay’s Katie Zingheim slipped past highly regarded MacKenzie Landry of Del Oro to win the pole vault. Woodcreek’s Kayla Kamaka equaled the third best height in the event to finish fifth, but her vault of 11 feet, 9 inches matches the required at-large height and she qualifies for a trip to Clovis. Zingheim joined a trio of Grizzly teammates who qualified for the state finals in Thursday field event finals. Granite Bay sophomore James Kinloch was the first Placer County athlete to qualify for the state meet with his second place Masters finish in the boys discus. With a toss of 161 feet, 7 inches, Kinloch sealed a spot in next week’s main event. Also advancing in field events were a number of pre-meet favorites. Granite Bay long jumper Justin Sutter, who has the longest leap in the state this year at 24 feet, 4 inches maxed out at 23-6 Thursday, a mark still good enough to win the section crown and send him to Clovis. Robbie Simmons of Rocklin won the section pole vault title with a top mark of 16 feet, 4 inches. His twin brother, Cale, finished in second place at 15 feet, 10 inches. Jordon Alviso of Granite Bay finished fourth, but his 15 foot, 4 inch top vault clears the 14 foot, 10 inch at-large height hurdle, so the Granite Bay senior will also participate next week. The Simmons brothers will be skipping the state meet in order to attend Rocklin High graduation. Granite Bay sophomore Brooke Holt stayed near the front of the pack most of the way, and as other runners peeled off, held her own to take second in the 3200 meter run, proving her decision to skip the 1600 a good one. “This was our plan all year - to double through the sectional and then drop the mile,” said Granite Bay coach Randall Sturgeon prior to the race. “Her goal is to make the state meet and break 11:00 at the Masters meet.” Her time of 11:05.16 was a bit slower than anticipated on a cool, breezy night at Hughes Stadium, but it was more than good enough to send her to the next level. Woodcreek’s Courtney Crosta, who beat Holt one week ago in taking the Division II 3200 final, finished third in the race, setting the duo up for one more meeting in Clovis. Christine Zavesky rounds out the Grizzly qualifiers, after her 5:05.20 in the 1600 was good enough for second position and a trip to state. Oakmont entered the night with high hopes, centered on talented sprinter Jazmin Harper. The sophomore, who won the section 400-meter dash title last year, fell .04 seconds short this time, taking second. Harper will have shot at redemption against Cierra Jordan of St. Mary’s, who edged her out, next week in Clovis. Harper came into Friday having qualified for four event finals, but will be running in just the 400 at the state meet. The Vikings 4x100 relay team finished fifth, and Harper was a late scratch in the 200-meter final, in preparation for the big event, the 4x400-meter relay final. The Vikings led that relay into the final turn of the anchor leg, but were passed by three opponents in an exhilarating stretch run, falling to fourth and missing out on qualifying for state. One of the three teams to pass Oakmont in the 4x400 final was Woodcreek, who finished second and earned a spot at the next level. The quartet was led off by Maya Cabiness, and after Hannah Hardy and Lauren Sederberg kept it going, another powerful anchor leg by sophomore speedster Jacque Harvel delivered the Timberwolves to Clovis.
