Sierra College all-state golfer Kevin Lucas is headed to the University of Nevada-Reno with the first Division I golf scholarship received by a Sierra College student-athlete. Coming off a record-breaking year with 13 rounds of par or better (including eight of his last nine rounds), Lucas’ 72.7 stroke average placed him second, just .2 behind fellow Sierra College and Big 8 MVP golfer Stephen Edman (Holy Names University). Lucas’ hard work in the classroom and on the links created a lot of attention when signing date came around. The phone started ringing after his dominant 69-67 win led Sierra College to its third straight Nor Cal Championship. Following up his state championship sixth-place finish, Lucas went on a fantastic roll this summer beginning with the Memorial Amateur at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course, where he shot a third round 64 to come back from eight strokes to eventually lose in a playoff for second place. He followed his second-place finish with tournament wins at the Redding Record Searchlight Open (66-78), the USGA Amateur qualifier at Yocha De He Golf Club (69-68) and most recently his course record 64-70 to win the West County Amateur at Franklin Canyon Golf Club. “After a heart-to-heart talk, I am very proud of the efforts Kevin has made to focus on his school work, his game and his dreams,” said coach Tim Hovancsek. Kevin is a true champion and will be a valuable asset and leader to the Wolf Pack program. We will miss him and wish him the best of luck,” said Sierra College coach Tim Hovancsek.
