Show off your junk with art contest

Participants create art with reusable materials

You don't have to be rich and have all the fanciest material to be an artist - not if reCREATE has anything to do with.

Instead, the Roseville nonprofit organization encourages aspiring artists to utilize reused and recycled materials in crafting their creative endeavors. These items can be found at reCREATE's Eco-Art Center on Washington Boulevard.

The organization is hosting the inaugural Junk 2 Genius team art competition on Wednesday, May 3, which challenges artisan warriors to turn boxes of clean, usable trash into sculptural masterpieces as they compete for the coveted Trophy du Trash and People's Choice awards.

The timed "sculpt-off" begins with each team receiving a box of similar items and racing against the clock to create a unique work of art. Contestants are encouraged to wear wacky costumes made from used materials to add to the fun.

ReCREATE Executive Director Donna Sangwin said her organization has hosted a similar event in Davis the past three years in partnership with the Davis Art Center. She thought it was time to bring the competition to Roseville.

"It's difficult to explain how much fun this event is," Sangwin said. "You really have to come out and see for yourself. Better yet, gather a team and sign up to compete."
