Granite Bay and Roseville players make up almost half of the North boys team’s roster for the annual Optimist volleyball matches Friday night at Capital Christian High School.

Representing Granite Bay are Matt Austin, Bryan Berry, Jake Neptune and Travis Vincenzini. Ryan Siu of Oakmont and Josh Frost of Roseville also are on the 13-man team.

“This is a great honor for the kids. We think the (Sierra Foothill League) is the mecca of volleyball,” said North head coach Bruce Honberger of Granite Bay, who will be assisted by John Kirk of Rocklin. “It’s just a way for the volleyball world to say, ‘Hey, we work harder, we train harder, and it pays off at the end.’ It’s nice after four years of volleyball they can get rewarded a little bit.”

Neptune registered 501 of Granite Bay’s 622 assists heading into Tuesday night’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division I semifinal against Nevada Union. He also had 37 aces.

Berry had 127 kills and Austin 123. Austin had 27 blocks and Berry 21. Vincenzini had 279 services received and 53 digs for the Grizzlies.

Frost led Roseville in several categories, including kills (351), aces (39), digs (89) and services received (318).

The boys match is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the girls match to follow. Granite Bay’s Lindsey Nelson is on the North girls roster.
