Vote and help school earn eBooks

Local mom and author Genny Heikka’s stories could mean an entire library of free eBooks for Diamond Creek Elementary School in Roseville. Two of her picture book manuscripts have been selected from hundreds of entries for a national writing competition, and it’s up to the public to vote.

The winner’s story will be professionally edited, illustrated and enhanced by MeeGenius, then published to the iPhone, iPad, Andriod, Google TV and the Internet. MeeGenius eBooks will go to the school of the winner’s choice. Heikka’s selected her kids’ school, Diamond Creek.

“I’m really excited about this contest because as a writer and as a person who loves to read, I can’t think of anything better than kids getting access to more books,” she said.

Former superintendent honored

Longtime Roseville educator Robert Tomasini recently received the 2011 Robert E. Kelly Award from the Association of California School Administrators, which honors individuals who contribute significantly to their communities upon retirement.

Tomasini retired as superintendent of Roseville Joint Union High School District in 2000 and has since volunteered to help his community. He serves on the board of the Gathering Inn, which aids the local homeless population.

He also serves on the Placer County Board of Education, championing public education and providing guidance for fellow board members, said Superintendent of Schools Gayle Garbolino-Mojica. Roseville City School District Superintendent Richard Pierucci said Tomasini has been instrumental in his development as an administrator.
