RHS wins Academic Decathlon

Roseville High School placed first in the 27th annual Placer County Academic Decathlon on Feb. 2. The team will advance to the California state competition in March in Sacramento. Roseville High School competed again Antelope, Lincoln and Rocklin high schools in the event. This year’s theme was “Russia,” and students were tested on economics, math, language and literature, social science, music and fine arts. Students also performed a prepared and impromptu speech, wrote an essay and were interviewed by a panel of business people.

GBHS Emerald Brigade seeks sponsors

Granite Bay High School’s Emerald Brigade Marching Band is seeking sponsors and donors for its fifth annual crab feed, silent auction and raffle fundraiser from 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Faith Center Lutheran Church, 6365 Douglas Blvd. in Granite Bay. The event will feature Mark S. Allen of “Good Day Sacramento” and “Mark @ The Movies” as master of ceremonies. Funds raised will help pay for instruments, instructors’ stipends and parade and field show competition expenses for the Emerald Brigade. The award-winning marching band has about 130 members, a jazz band, concert band, winter guard and winter percussion. The Eureka Union School District and Eureka Schools Foundation is hosting a community town hall meeting from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the multipurpose room at Oakhills/Ridgeview Elementary School, 9233 Twin School Road in Granite Bay. John Adams open enrollment period

John Adams Academy, a charter school in Roseville, is now accepting applications for open enrollment for the 2013-14 school year. Open enrollment closes Thursday, Feb. 28, and is followed by a lottery on Monday, March 11, to determine placement priority and establish grade-level wait lists for the upcoming year. The enrollment process involves four steps: an online application and document submission, assessment, personal interview and submission of enrollment paperwork. St. Rose students thank City Council

St. Rose School students recently decided to honor local elected officials by designing and sending thank-you cards to Roseville City Council members. JoAnn Castori’s eighth-grade class and Peggie Silva’s kindergarten class worked together on the project. The older kids wrote the notes and the younger kids decorated the envelopes.

Jessup hosting Placer County STEM Expo

The third annual Placer County STEM Expo takes place Saturday, March 2, at William Jessup University, 333 Sunset Blvd. in Rocklin. The expo is the region’s innovative alternative to the typical science fair. This free event features science, technology, engineering and mathematics as educational opportunities and viable career paths, and showcases elementary through high school student work. There will also be presentations and interactive events. The goal is to encourage young minds to experience hands-on science. The Placer County STEM Expo offers seven elective categories from which students can choose to do a project for viewing or judging: Rube Goldberg, invention, science fiction, environmental innovation, engineering, engineering and scientific inquiry. Kindergarten registration open in Eureka district

Kindergarten registration begins Feb. 4 in the Eureka Union School District. If your child will turn 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, you may pick up a registration packet for the 2013-14 school year at any of the K-3 schools: Greenhills School, Maidu School and Oakhills School. If your child turns 5 years old between Oct. 2 and Dec. 2, he/she is eligible for a transitional kindergarten class. For more information, visit
