Kids raise money for cancer organization

Sargeant Elementary School students raised $2,796 for Pennies for Patients, which ended Jan. 27. The annual drive is sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the money goes toward finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients.

Kohl’s scholarships available

Kohl’s department stores will award more than $420,000 in scholarships and prizes to some 2,200 young volunteers who have made a positive impact on their communities through its Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. To nominate a child between the age of 6 and 18, visit www.kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older. The deadline is Thursday, March 15.

Robotics tournament March 17

The FIRST Robotics tournament finals will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, in the ARC Pavilion, on the UC Davis campus, 232 ARC One Shields Avenue. Granite Bay High School and Lincoln High School will be among the schools participating. For more information, visit www.firstsac.org. The national nonprofit organization, with a Sacramento regional chapter, promotes science and technology.

Educator appointed to Journal

Roseville resident and long time educator Dr. JoLynn Britt was recently appointed to serve as a member of Sacramento State’s Journal of Transformative Leadership and Policy Studies Editorial Board. Britt is a faculty member at William Jessup University’s Liberal Studies and Credentialing Department where she teaches courses and currently supervises six student teachers. She also teaches part-time at Sacramento State University.

“I come from a family of educators,” Britt said. “Both of my parents and my sister are educators. It seems that my abilities and interests are well-suited to the profession.”
