Girl Scouts host food drive

Girl Scout Troop 1572 of Greenhills Elementary School in Granite Bay is collecting food from neighbors and friends for the KCRA Kids Can! Food Drive. They are asking community members to donate canned and boxed foods, which will go into holiday baskets organized by the Granite Bay Rotary and Kiwanis clubs. Drop off donations at your local elementary school, give them to a student or email co.op_troop@yahoo.com to schedule a pick-up on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Buljan teacher earns honor

Catherine Baker-Davis was in for a surprise when visitors stopped by Buljan Middle School in Roseville on Nov. 9 to present her with a certificate and gift card and name her “Teacher of the Year,” presented by Woodcreek Orthodontics in Roseville. This summer, the clinic held a contest for patients to nominate their favorite teacher, instructor or coach for the special recognition. Patient Morgan Cutter won the contest with her nomination of Baker-Davis.

Maidu students show their patriotic colors

Maidu Elementary School students showed their red, white and blue in time for Veterans Day with a patriotic assembly Nov. 10 that featured songs and presentations. During the event, Tyler Brazil, 6, presented his dad, Josh Brazil, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, with flowers to thank him for his military service.

Toys for Tots drop off

Donate to Toys for Tots and help make the holidays brighter for less fortunate children in our community. Brandman University is hosting a collection event from 6-10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at its campus, 3001 Lava Ridge Court in Roseville. Volunteers will greet people curbside to gather the toys. Brandman’s office is also accepting donations 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays.

GBHS choir sings at Denio’s

Granite Bay High School’s madrigal choir is fundraising to send 10 students to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall. They need to raise a total of $18,000. The choir will host a singing event fundraiser from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Denio’s Farmers Market and Swap Meet, 1551 Vineyard Road in Roseville.

Drexel names new director

Drexel University named Dr. Sandra Kirschenmann executive director of the Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies on Nov. 9. She begins her tenure Dec. 12. Kirschenmann previously served as vice chancellor for resource development for Los Rios Community College District since 2003. As director, she will oversee all Drexel Sacramento operations. The center opened three years ago and now has 300 students in eight programs, many from Placer County, according to a news release.
