Wild Bill’s Tattoo in Roseville will be hosting its ninth annual Tattoo-a-thon benefiting the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Saturday. Eighteen tattoo artists and piercing experts will work from 8 a.m. until midnight without pay — all proceeds (including tips and sales of gift certificates and jewelry) will go to the hospital. Owner Bill Hill put out the call to artists from New Mexico, Italy and Southern California, who will be working Saturday’s event. Last year, the event brought in $17,000 for the hospital that treats children with trauma, cancer and many other pediatric health conditions. “There are some pretty moving stories. We do a lot of footprints and portraits (of children who have died),” Hill said. “People come from all over to get work done, some people come from the hospital bedside where their child is sick. Someone tells them they have got to leave and get their mind off things, so they come here and get tattooed.” Although tattooed guys and gals may have a reputation of being tough, Hill said the Tattoo-a-thon shows they’ve got heart. Hill said he even got “misty eyed” when he learned that a wing of the Sacramento hospital would be named for the shop, which has raised $95,000 over the last nine years. “I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. “We are truly honored.” One-hundred customers have booked appointments Saturday, but drop-ins are available. Hill advises you come early so you don’t have to wait a long time. “Every year, a lot of people wait and come in that day to get tattooed,” he said. “It’s a way for them to contribute and get something back.” ~ Michelle Carl ---------- Wild Bill’s Tattoo-a-thon What: Benefit for UC Davis Children’s Hospital When: 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 20 Where: Wild Bill’s Tattoo, 205 Vernon St., Roseville Info: (916) 783-9090
