In a back-and-forth battle, the Roseville High wrestling team captured its first league dual competition Tuesday on alumni night at Roseville. More than 50 Tiger wrestling alumni dating as far back as the 1960s gathered with the current Roseville wrestlers on a night of celebration at Moeller Gym. The dual meet came down to the final two matches to hit the mat. “The energy in the gym was awesome,” said Roseville coach Jeremiah Miller. “It was great to have all those people here to support us.” The Tigers claimed those last two bouts and won the overall battle as well, knocking off Rocklin 42-36. Entering the 189-pound match even at 30-30, and knowing that it was giving up six points with a forfeit in the heavyweight division, Roseville knew that it had to win both remaining matches. That forfeit essentially had the score at 36-30 for Rocklin as Joe Carmona took the mat in the 189-pound division. Carmona took his opponent down and turned him a number of times before finally securing a fall and tying the score at 36-36. Senior Alex Mertz was next on the mat at 215 pounds for the Tigers and sealed the victory by pinning his Thunder foe. “Joe and Alex really stepped up for us today and did what they knew needed to be done,” said Roseville coach Rick Randolph. “It helped with them both being seniors. Sometimes that type of leadership comes with a bit more maturity. We are proud of them.” Roseville’s Dylan Jankovich and Matt Conley also scored pins for the Tigers. In other wrestling action this week, Woodcreek claimed a close 32-28 win over Granite Bay. The Grizzlies won just four of the 13 matches on the day, but three of their wins came by pin to keep them in the competition. Woodcreek dominated the lighter weight classes, while Granite Bay made a serious dent in the heavier divisions. Quinn Walker (125) and Corey Butzer (160) won by pin for Woodcreek, while Charlie Gordon (171), William Anderson (189) and Gavin Andrews (285) all pinned their opponent from Granite Bay.
