SACRAMENTO — For a team that began the season with only a handful of players and no manager, Roseville West’s Senior all-stars exceeded expectations.

Roseville West, the District 54 champion, lost to Antelope 7-6 in eight innings Monday night in the losers’ bracket of the Section 4 Tournament at American River College.

“Getting out of district was a real accomplishment for these guys,” Roseville West manager Shane Nelson said. “At the beginning, there wasn’t a team or a coach, but by the end, they were all gelling and playing their best baseball.”

While the postseason almost didn’t happen for the team, its chances against Antelope were there.

Starter John Kidder pitched three scoreless innings, and Roseville West build a 3-0 lead.

Adam Starr put Roseville West up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first inning, and Daniel Nakamoto had an RBI double in the second. Johnathan Burcham also drove in a run.

Carlos Guzman's RBI and a bases-loaded walk by Spencer Bracco gave Roseville West a 5-4 lead going into the seventh.

Antelope singled in the tying run in the seventh to force extra innings and scored two runs in the eighth.

Roseville West had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth and pulled within 7-6 when Alex Hennagin was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout ended the game.
