Roseville tops Woodcreek, falls to Rocklin in SFL volleyball

Roseville High School’s volleyball team split two Sierra Foothill League matches this week, sweeping Woodcreek on Monday and losing at Rocklin 3-0 on Wednesday.

Middle hitters Abby Jensen and Jennifer Simon had 11 kills each for the Tigers in their 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 victory over Woodcreek, and outside hitter Kirsten Merlino had 10 kills.

Sophomore Jessica Yaranon finished a solid match with a set to Abbey Jensen for the final kill. Hayley Barnes and Lindsey Anderson led the Roseville defense in the back row.

At Rocklin, the Tigers came back from a 21-7 deficit in the second set but fell short in a 27-25, 25-23, 25-9 setback. Merlino served 12 consecutive points in the second set.

Jensen led Roseville with 14 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Lindsay Anderson had 18 digs and Marrisa Dumford 16. Anderson filled in at libero for an ill Barnes. Leslie Pease came up big in the first set.

Boys water polo

Granite Bay 19, Bear River 10 — Alek Dendall scored six goals to lead the Grizzlies past the Bruins. Max Vigeant and Kevin Wylder each scored three goals, and Nathan Pinkney and Jack Ellinthorpe had two apiece.

Corey Consunji, Matt Giles and Patrick Carroll had one goal each. In goal, Max Munsell blocked five shots and Tyler Kinney four.

Roseville 12, Rocklin 10 — Nick Sapp scored five goals and Chance Owen made 19 saves as the Tigers (6-11, 2-4) defeated the Thunder. Evan Attica scored three goals, Eric Waters two and Jared Samsel one for Roseville.

Hole in one

Glen McDonald made a hole in one at Woodcreek Golf Club on Wednesday. McDonald used a 9-iron on No. 17, which played at 103 yards.
