Roseville soccer trio plays for state title with Sierra College
The Sierra College women’s soccer team, featuring three starters from Roseville high schools, is in the CCCAA State Championship semifinals.
The Wolverines (16-5-3), seeded No. 1 in Northern California, will face South No. 2 Cerritos (19-2-2) at 7 p.m. today at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Freshman forward Marissa Griffen, formerly of Woodcreek, sophomore midfielder Kayla Granley (Roseville) and freshman defender Tiffani Rice (Oakmont) are starters for Sierra. Griffen has seven assists this season and Rice two.
North No. 2 American River (13-5-4) plays South No. 1 Santiago Canyon (22-0-1) in the other semifinal. The championship match is at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Hoop Shoot free throw contest is Dec. 8
Roseville Elks Lodge No. 2248 has scheduled its annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest for Saturday, Dec. 8, in the gym at Kaseberg Elementary School, 1040 Main Street, in Roseville.
Sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, this is the first stop in the national competition. Winners in Roseville will advance to the district competition. State, regional and national tournaments follow.
The contest begins at 3 p.m. and is open to boys and girls ages 8-13. Age groups will be 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group.

Woodcreek announces girls basketball league
Woodcreek High School’s girls basketball program will hold its Little Lady Timberwolves youth league on four consecutive Saturday mornings — Jan. 19 and 26 and Feb. 2 and 9.
The league is open to girls in kindergarten through sixth grade. The Woodcreek coaching staff and players will teach basic offensive and defensive fundamentals during each 90-minute session, a combination practice and game. Divisions will be split up by grade: K-2, 3-4 and 5-6.
The pre-registration price is $60 by Dec. 20. Late registration, which costs $75, will be held at 8 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Woodcreek gym.
