Roseville opens girls soccer playoffs with shutoutBy: Staff Reports
Roseville and Granite Bay high schools began the Sac-Joaquin Section girls soccer playoffs with victories on the road Tuesday.
The Tigers (10-4-2), seeded 10th in Division II, blanked seventh-seeded Gregori 3-0 in Modesto as senior Marissa Vaughan and juniors Lindsey Anderson and Hayley Barnes scored goals. Roseville was to travel to play No. 2 Ponderosa on Thursday. Ponderosa beat No. 15 Modesto-Downey 2-0 in the first round.
Granite Bay (9-6-2), seeded ninth in Division I, left Turlock with a 3-1 victory. Junior Chloe Dobson scored her team-leading eighth goal in the ninth minute, and freshman Maggie Bell and senior Brigid Lummis scored in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to put the Grizzlies into the quarterfinals against No. 1 Davis. The teams were scheduled to play Thursday. Lummis has seven goals and Bell six.
Karrisa Conner of Granite Bay finished third in the varsity girls competition at the section diving finals at Modesto-Johansen. Conner totaled 418.2 points. Mikaela Lujan of Nevada Union won with 463.3, followed by Amy Crayne of St. Francis with 461.9.
Granite Bay’s Stephen Smyth was the runner-up in the frosh-soph boys finals with 339.9 points. Carson Guendert of Stockton-St. Mary’s was the runaway winner with 454.7.
In frosh-soph girls, Katrina Waters of Roseville finished fourth with 284.55. Kaitlyn Abernethy of Vacaville won with 375.35.
Granite Bay lost to Delta River League champion Jesuit 9-0 in the Division I team tennis semifinals Tuesday. The Grizzlies advanced to the semifinals by beating Delta Valley Conference runner-up Elk Grove 8-1 and DRL No. 3 Pleasant Grove 7-2.
In the Division I individual tournament at Johnson Ranch, freshman Mitchell Iwahiro took top-seeded Anatoliy Beynars of Jesuit to three sets in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 loss in the semifinals.
SFL doubles champions Dallas Guerrero and Alex Bychoviak of Roseville won two matches to advance to the semifinals before losing to top seeds Avery Moore and Bobby Fritz of Jesuit.
In Division II, Oakmont senior Taylor Phan and freshman partner Johann Monticello won two matches before losing in the semifinals to an American Canyon duo 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
