Roseville neighborhood fundraises for turkeys
After forming earlier this month, the seven-member board for the Blue Oaks Neighborhood Association got down to work.
Their first order of business: Raise enough money to donate 100 turkeys to families in need.
Board President David Larson had the idea when he signed up for the 5K Roseville Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. He realized he could turn his participation into a fundraiser by asking neighbors to pledge money.
Placer Food Bank Executive Director Dave Martinez told Larson his organization can purchase an 18-pound turkey for $5. The food bank distributes food to 55 partnering agencies.
Fast forward to today: The neighborhood association has raised enough money to buy nearly 230 turkeys.
Resident John Sala pledged $100. Larson has promised to match the highest donation, and eight other families and one business have also signed on. Four board members and Sala will run the Turkey Trot.
“I am so inspired by these people,” Larson said.
They’re hoping to raise even more money while they’re on a roll.
The fundraiser ends Tuesday, Nov. 22. To pledge, make a check payable to Placer Food Bank, write BONA in the memo line and mail to 8284 Industrial Ave., Roseville, CA 95678. Or visit the Blue Oaks Neighborhood Association Facebook page for more information.
