Martha Riley Community Library patron Minell Fredricks got a lesson on a new online catalog and computer system from librarian Joan Goff on Wednesday morning.

Roseville’s public libraries launched the system Jan. 2 after reopening from a holiday break.

“We’re excited about this system,” Goff said. “It allows people to keep their reading history, which we didn’t have before. People can comment, tag or star items, which we didn’t have before. People can create lists for themselves. These are features people kind of expect these days and we haven’t had them.”

Local libraries previously didn’t keep a patron’s reading history. But the new system allows the patron to create her own online account and save a list of books she’s checked out, which only she can view. The system also has an improved search function. Patrons can review books and post their comments to Twitter and Facebook.

Riley Library is located at 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd., Downtown Roseville Library is at 225 Taylor St. and Maidu Library is at 1530 Maidu Drive. For more information, visit www.roseville.ca.us/library.
