Don't expect to be able to get on a machine at the Roseville Athletic Club anytime soon “ it's now closed. The gym, which had been located at site of one of Roseville's oldest fitness clubs, quietly shut its doors late last month, according to a notice posted to the building's doors. As the club has continued to struggle we have been faced with a very difficult decision, the notice, signed Regretfully, Management and Staff, reads. It is with deep regret that we inform you that Roseville Athletic Club will be closing as of January 31, 2009. Originally operated under the Kangaroo Courts name, the club, located at 200 S. Harding Blvd., was purchased by the Wenmat Fitness chain several years ago. The chain owns several other fitness centers in the Sacramento area, including the Alhambra Athletic Club in Sacramento. Wenmat Fitness had not returned a call for comment Monday afternoon, but in the posted notice cited disruption from nearby freeway construction as well as competition from other fitness clubs “singling out the city-owned Roseville Sports Center “ for a loss of current and new memberships. The City of Roseville's fitness facility not only caters to our market segment but also has the added advantage of a non-profit status, it reads, referring to the Sports Center, which includes a workout area and offers personal training. The notice said members would not be billed for January dues and some would receive pro-rated refunds on memberships. Reach Nathan Donato-Weinstein at
