Impressive performances in some critical matches delivered the Roseville High School wrestling team a 36-27 win over Granite Bay last Thursday in the first Sierra Foothill League dual match of the season for both squads. The heavyweight class was up first and set the tone for the night for the Tigers as Cody Arena stepped up from his usual 215-pound weight class and decisioned Granite Bay senior Thomas Haney 6-2. “The move worked in our favor,” Roseville coach Tom Gonzalez said. “Cody wrestled a very smart match against a bigger, stronger kid and he never trailed in the match.” Andrew Broadland of Granite Bay took a 3-2 decision over Roseville’s Derek Hoag at 103 pounds, but a win by Davis Runner at 112 pounds put the Tigers back on top, and they built the lead from there. Dylan Jankovich pinned Granite Bay’s Ian Mook in the 125-pound match. The Grizzlies got big wins from Michael Austin at 130 pounds and Alex Asturias at 215, but Granite Bay’s top wrestler, Ryan Loder, won by default at 189 pounds as the Tigers put no one up against him. “We had some great matches from some young wrestlers,” Granite Bay coach Mike Lynch said. “Though they lost, they wrestled well and did a great job. Tyler Lent (112) and Adam Wagner (135) battled from start to finish and just came up on the wrong side of a couple of close matches.” The critical contests of the match may well have been a pair of unexpected pins by Roseville wrestlers. “Key points in the match were (Matthew) Conley's pin at 119 and (Kris) McFate's pin at 145. Both were unexpected, but a very nice bonus,” Gonzalez said. “I knew we were strong at both weight classes but I didn’t have us down for a pin when I drew it up.” Roseville faced a very strong Nevada Union team Tuesday in what was expected to be a very competitive contest before moving on to face Oakmont Thursday at home. “Oakmont is where we were a few years ago,” Gonzalez said. “Nick Diaz is doing a good job keeping up their program and continues to build on it. He's got some tough kids over there that we saw this weekend and I’m looking forward to getting on the mat with them Thursday.” Granite Bay was at Oakmont Tuesday and will host league superpower Del Oro Thursday. Woodcreek hosted Rocklin Tuesday and will host Nevada Union Thursday.
