The Optimist All-Star Football Classic was held for the 56th time on Dec. 22 at Del Oro High School. That night, the All-City Small School Football Classic was held for the first time.

Seniors from Roseville and Granite Bay schools took part and had an impact in both games.

Woodcreek quarterback Stephen Nogosek threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Trayvon Henderson of Grant to give the North the lead for good in a game it would go on to win 61-34.

Johnny Cooley, the leading rusher with 1,605 yards for Granite Bay’s CIF Division I state championship team, was a late addition to the North roster, but he didn’t carry the ball. Cooley did, however, play defensive back, and he also blocked a punt.

Also playing for the North were Justin Hyde of Oakmont, Grant Jansen of Roseville and Tyler Arneson of Granite Bay.

In the small school game, Josh Bowden, Teagan Mowry and Caleb Van Patten of Valley Christian Academy played for the North in its 16-12 loss to the South. Bowden recovered a fumble.
