Backcourt scoring carried the day as the Roseville High School girls basketball team survived a second-half Rocklin rally to win its first Sierra Foothill League game 46-45 Wednesday night in Rocklin. With junior center Katie Simon struggling at the offensive end, a pair of guards picked up the slack and delivered for the Lady Tigers. Senior Alicia Mervau hit 4-of-9 from beyond the arc as she led Roseville with 14 points, while junior Raina Loya was the Tigers’ only other double-digit scorer with 10. Simon scored eight points, but did not allow her scoring struggles impact her play on defense. She blocked eight shots, snared 10 rebounds and nabbed four steals to pace the Roseville resistance. Mervau dished out six assists on top of her team-high scoring night. Junior forward Madison Smith led the Thunder with 12 points, Emily Shields added nine and Alyssa Johnson eight. Rocklin (1-2 in the SFL, 11-6 overall) visits Nevada Union (1-1, 7-10) Friday night, and Roseville (1-2, 9-8) hosts league-leading Del Oro (2-0, 13-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
