Roseville gets hot in Reno volleyball tournament

Granite Bay wins in pool; Oakmont victorious on course

Roseville sandwiched a 13th-place finish in the 36-team High Sierra Invitational last weekend in Reno between a sweep of Woodland on Sept. 1 and a loss to Rio Americano on Tuesday.

In Reno, the Tigers (9-3) went 1-2 on Sept. 2, losing to defending Division I state champion Palo Alto, and then went 6-0 last Saturday to win the King Division.

Roseville was led by senior setter Kali Lauhon and libero Amanda Susbilla on defense.

Kirsten Merlino had a team-high five kills in Roseville’s 26-24, 25-13, 25-18 loss to Rio Americano.

Susbilla continued her stellar play with 10 kills in the Tigers’ 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 victory over Woodland. Merlino had seven kills, and Marrissa Dumford and Jen Simon had six kills each. Corinne Smith had eight digs, Leslie Pease five blocks and Jen Simon four blocks. Kelsey Starr had six aces.

Roseville defeated visiting rival Oakmont 3-1 on Thursday night and will play in the Oak Ridge Tournament today.

Granite Bay 3, Oak Ridge 0 — The Grizzlies improved to 3-0 with a 25-18, 27-25, 25-20 sweep of the visiting Trojans.

— Sophomore Grace Reego scored six goals and goalie Sara Northam made 12 blocks to earn her first varsity win as the Grizzlies defeated the Vikings in their season opener. Senior Jolie Rogers scored two goals and junior Hayley McAvoy and freshman Lia Patrinellis one each for Granite Bay.

“I’m proud of the way the team focused on fundamentals to earn the win,” new Granite Bay coach Genna Masters said. “We have been working on developing a strong defense, and the fact we had four steals by four different players helped us with counterattack opportunities.”
