Roseville firefighters seek golfers for fundraiser
One of Roseville's longest-running golf fundraisers returns for its 21st annual event to benefit local teachers.
The Roseville Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament takes place Oct. 8 at Timber Creek Golf Course at Sun City and raises money for the "Outstanding Teacher Program," which recognizes local teachers who go above and beyond in making learning fun and innovative for their students.
The program benefits educators in Roseville City School District, Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District and Roseville Joint Union High School District. Roseville firefighters have raised more than $100,000 since the inaugural golf tournament in 1991.
Dry Creek Superintendent Mark Geyer said the partnership assists teachers with paying for special projects and additional materials, which is especially critical as districts throughout the state of California grapple with budget deficits.
"It really helps our programs in terms of our teachers doing an excellent job and doing some enhancements" Geyer said. "It really helps the whole school they're at, in addition to their (own) classrooms."
Fire Engineer Dave Killmer, the tournament director, said the event typically fills up with about 130 participants. Golfers must register by Oct. 1, and Roseville Firefighters Local 1592 are also accepting sponsorships and raffle prize donations.
Killmer said organizers hope to raise as much money as possible and they're crossing their fingers for good fall weather.
"Last year was the first time it ever rained - and it poured," Killmer said.
Roseville City Councilwoman Carol Garcia has helped on the tournament every year since 1994 and she calls the firefighters' efforts to help school districts "awesome."
