Roseville district postpones Sierra Gardens vote
Roseville City School District has postponed the vote on the reconfiguration of Eich Intermediate School and closure of Sierra Gardens Elementary School until March 1.
The board of trustees was expected to vote Thursday, Feb. 16, but administrators felt more time was needed. The topic will appear as an informational item on the agenda for the February meeting.
“We want an opportunity to respond to the board on some of the comments and questions that were brought up at the last meeting, so that we can have clarity on the issue,” said Superintendent Richard Pierucci.
The district may close Sierra Gardens as an elementary school in 2013 and turn Eich into a sixth through eighth grade campus. Currently, Eich only serves seventh and eighth graders.
If this happens, Sierra Gardens would house the sixth graders who attend Eich. The campuses are located adjacent to one another.
The change is meant, in part, to address declining enrollment at three of Eich’s feeder schools — Sierra Gardens, Sargeant Elementary School and Crestmont Elementary School. Enrollment for these campuses has declined about 10 percent over the past five years, while enrollment for the district has increased about 13 percent during that timeframe, Pierucci said.
Some parents have launched a petition opposing the plan.
The Feb. 16 meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the district office, 1050 Main Street in Roseville. For the agenda, visit www.rcsdk8.org.
