Shady Coffee & Tea is brewing up something new, just in time for Sacramento’s third annual Beer Week.

The coffee shop and café, which opened in July 2010 and known as the only local purveyor of San Francisco’s Four Barrel Coffee, recently added beer to its menu options, just in time for Sacramento Beer Week, which begins Friday and will run through March 3.

Beer Week was started by local beer enthusiasts and industry professionals in 2010 as a way to promote the appreciation of beer in Sacramento area breweries, pubs and restaurants, according to the event’s website.

Shady Coffee & Tea will take part in the annual festival for the first time and manager Mike Mclean has added about 14 different hand-crafted microbrews leading up to the event.

Shelley Williams, owner of Shady Coffee & Tea, said the decision to add beer to the coffee shop’s offerings came about after customers began asking for it.

“We have a lot of people who just walk here from the neighborhood,” Williams said. “Now they can just walk here in the evening, have a beer or two on our patio and walk home.”

Williams said wine will also be offered in the near future.

For now, beer offerings include Old Rasputin Brother Thelonius, a Belgian-style abbey ale from the North Coast Brewing Company, Samual Smith Brown Nut Ale, Chimay Peres Trappistes Belgian Ale and Firestone Union Jack India Pale Ale.

“It’s supposed to be a rotating list, but we get so attached to them that the list just gets longer,” Mclean said. “We are running out of fridge space, we’re actually full at the moment.”

Shady Coffee & Tea will kick off Beer Week celebrations with an open mic Friday night, featuring Sacramento’s Lindsay Pavao, a finalist on NBCs “The Voice.”

The restaurant will also debut “beer trivia” Saturday night and continue celebrations all week.

But Shady Coffee & Tea isn’t the only Roseville establishment taking part in Sacramento Beer Week.

Perfecto Lounge will hold specials and tastings all week, as will Nugget Market, Bev Mo! and many others.

Mark Vespoli, manager at the Owl Club in Roseville’s Old Town, said just in time for Beer Week, the club installed six new taps and introduced 10 new craft beers.

Among those beers is The Abyss, from Deschutes’s Brewery in Bend, Ore., a double imperial stout with an alcohol content of 11 percent.

The Owl Club will be the only bar serving the Abyss on draft, Vespoli said.

The Owl Club will also debut Temptation, an American wild ale from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s Ruthless Rye IPA will also be served on draft.

Vespoli agreed that the Sacramento Beer Week helps to promote hand-crafted microbrews.

“There is a lot of interest out there in craft brews,” Vespoli said. “We have a lot of clientele that are home brewers, and some of them would like to expand to become bigger.”
