Roseville-area riders stand out among more than 600 strong at NorCal BMX State ChampionshipsBy: Amanda Calzada/Roseville Press Tribune Correspondent
Soaring swiftly up and down slopes at Oak Creek BMX in Roseville, more than 600 bikers raced to the finish line at the NorCal State Championships on Sunday.
“The unknown sport — that’s what we call ourselves,” said Bruce Minton who, with wife Linda, has seen the track develop into a financial catalyst for the region since 1984.
Home of 24 of NorCal State Championships and 12 national championships, Oak Creek has pumped $80 million into the local economy through its visiting competitors, families and fans, according to Minton.
Last weekend’s event drew a 20-percent increase in competitors — novices, intermediates and experts who came from Bakersfield up to the California-Oregon border to race in classes from 5 and under to 45 and over.
Among the elite level of competition, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Donny Robinson returned to the Roseville track and won the Pro/Am division.
Other local winners included Nick Elliott of Granite Bay in 12 Cruiser, Angela Smith of Roseville in 15 Girls Cruiser and Breanna Winter of Antelope in 7 Girls.
Nick Adams of Orangevale rocked the 9-year-old expert category, winning two motos Sunday morning and coming back in the afternoon to capture first in the Expert and Cruiser finals. Adams has won Expert titles in his age group four years in a row at the State Championships.
“I just believe in myself,” said Adams, whose three-days-a-week training at Oak Creek BMX is “hard but fun.”
Sharing the strategy, Roseville’s Brenna Brady also said she believes in herself. Brady, who placed third last year in the girls 9-year-old event, has been in racing condition for a week and a half after recovering from breaking her hand in three spots.
Brady’s strategy, to “pedal around those turns really hard,” led to a runner-up finish in 10 girls.
