Roseville-area players compete in NCAA Super Regionals
Roseville-area baseball players this weekend are trying to take the final step to the College World Series.
Granite Bay High School graduate Andrew Knapp is playing for Cal and Roseville native Andrew Susac for Oregon State in NCAA Super Regional series.
Cal plays host to Dallas Baptist at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Santa Clara University in game one of their best-of-three series. Game two is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday with game three Monday if necessary. Super Regional winners advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The Cal-Dallas Baptist series was moved to Santa Clara’s Stephen Schott Baseball Stadium because Evans Diamond at Cal doesn’t have lights, and the games will be televised on ESPNU.
Knapp, a freshman catcher, has started 15 games and played in 28 for the Bears (35-21). He’s hitting .215 with one home run and 15 RBI.
Giant killer Dallas Baptist (42-18) beat Oklahoma State, TCU, Rice, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the regular season and then won the Fort Worth Regional by beating Oklahoma and TCU again and Oral Roberts.
Also playing for Cal are freshman left-hander Kyle Porter, formerly of Oak Ridge, and sophomore left-hander Matt Evanoff, formerly of Ponderosa.
Susac is hitting .313 with a team-best 32 RBI and four triples for Oregon State (41-17) heading into its series against Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. The catcher also has five homers and nine doubles.
On Tuesday, Susac was drafted by the World Series-champion San Francisco Giants in the second round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft.
Vanderbilt (50-10) began the 64-team NCAA Championship as the No. 6 seed. Game one is Friday, June 10. Game two is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2 with game three Sunday if necessary.
Also playing for Oregon State is freshman pitcher Dan Child of Rocklin. Susac and Child played high school baseball at Jesuit.
UC Irvine freshman Justin Castro, another former Rocklin player, is with the Anteaters in Charlottesville, Va., for their Super Regional against No. 1 Virginia (52-9). Games one and two are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on ESPNU.
