Roseville 8-year-old wins national tennis tournament

Aidan Mayo of Roseville didn’t lose a set in rolling to the boys 8-year-old championship at the USTA Little Mo Nationals, held Oct. 15-17 in Austin, Texas.

Mayo, the No. 2 seed, opened with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Bobby Botsford of Delray Beach, Fla., and followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Teddy Truwit of Darien, Conn., in the quarterfinals.

Mayo, who plays out of Gorin Tennis Academy in Granite Bay, beat Anesh Jayasundera of Austin, Texas, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and Evan Lee of Cos Cob, Conn., 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Mayo’s brother, Keenan, recently won the Boys 12 Courtside Junior Championships in Los Gatos and placed second at the Fremont Junior Championships. Playing as the top seed, Keenan Mayo swept four opponents en route to the Courtside title. In Fremont, he lost to doubles partner Austen Huang of Elk Grove in a marathon third set 17-15.

Keenan Mayo, 11, will play a semifinal match today in the Broadstone Junior Excellence tournament in Folsom. He and Huang won the doubles crown last weekend. Mayo will finish the year as the No. 1 player in the USTA Northern California Boys 12 rankings.
