The Rocklin High School girls tennis team opened Sierra Foothill League play with a victory and a loss in their first week of play. After losing a tight match to Del Oro, Sept. 20, the Thunder played host to Roseville and handed the Tigers a 7-2 defeat. Rocklin tennis head coach Dale Eckenburg said it was great tennis with competition at its best. “We knew the first week was going to be tough with perennial power Del Oro on Tuesday and Roseville on Thursday,” said Eckenburg. The Thunder fell to Del Oro 5-4. The Golden Eagles’ two top players put the visitors up early, but the Thunder didn’t go quietly. Senior Shannon Peiffer played great tennis in her straight-set victory, as did Jessica Miller at the No. 5 spot to even the match. The doubles teams of Christina Dyok and Rachel Kim, and Angie Tran and Taylor McDougall played very well in setting the team up for a possible result. But the final match slipped away as the Thunder couldn’t overcome first set losses at the remaining three lines. That was not the case on Thursday when Rocklin pulled out those close wins in singles matches No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 in three sets to secure four wins. Then the doubles teams took care of business in straight sets. “Our singles girls have tremendous heart and are competing until the last point is served.” said Eckenburg. “Pulling out four, three-set matches is a tremendous testament to the girls.” Senior Holly Petersen and sophomore Sangeetha Ramamurthy played exceptionally well in closing out the match to secure the 7-2 victory. “Getting four wins versus Del Oro, and 7 wins versus Roseville sets the Thunder up for the playoffs” Eckenburg said “It gives us confidence that we can turn the losses versus Del Oro and with the seven wins it puts us in the playoffs if we continue to take care of business with the remaining schedule.”
