With senior leaders Shane Welch, the two-meter center forward, and goalie Zac Daniewicz both out of the game due to illness, Oakmont High boys varsity water polo coach Mark Plank was nervous entering Thursday’s game against Rocklin. “Needless to say I was very uncomfortable going into this game with a team that has always proven to be a very challenging opponent for Oakmont,” Plank said. “As suspected, we had a hard time scoring early on.” The first quarter ended in a 2-2 tie and halftime score was 3-3 before Oakmont got its game going after intermission. The Vikings took a 9-5 lead into the fourth quarter and eventually won the game 12-6. Junior Taylor Nordell led Oakmont with six goals, while junior Drew Wixon led the passing attack with 6 assists and also scored one goal. Senior David Smith chipped in three goals and 1 assist. Seniors Kenny Smith and Stevie Gehrmann each added a goal and an assist for the team. Junior goalie Greg Mattos got the call to replace Daniewicz and did a solid job in the goal with eight blocks and two assists. In other boys varsity water polo action Thursday night, Bear River beat Whitney 18-10, Granite Bay swamped Roseville 26-8 and Del Oro held off Woodcreek 12-10.
