I have had a major proponent of Measure K say directly to my face that her vision of the Newcastle Fire Protection District is to split it up into three or four parts and have each part consolidate with another fire district. That is not my vision for Newcastle.
Newcastle is a proud community. We pride ourselves on our fine schools, our active service clubs, our thriving business and agricultural sectors and our fine fire department.
Our firefighters work with dedication and professionalism under the most difficult conditions. Newcastle is a community that takes care of its own. Now, it is time for us to take care of our firefighters.
We need to build a fire station which provides for our firefighters and community. We need to make sure that we continue to pay our firefighters more than $8.50 per hour and provide them with a health care benefit. We need to take care of our own.
We can only do this by voting no on Measure K. We cannot ask residents of other fire districts to pay for their fire departments to give us service at no charge because we don’t want to pay. That is not fair.
And we would not expect to give services to neighboring locales because they didn’t want to pay. We expect and want to provide for ourselves. As a Newcastle business owner, I know I will pay more with the parcel tax. I want to pay my way and help provide for Newcastle. Vote no on K.
