A one-woman cheesecake factory

'Quality' is in quantity at Beaches Gourmet Cheesecake
A budding cheesecake business could be one of the best-kept secrets in Roseville. Susie DeVriend, owner of Beaches Gourmet Cheesecakes, is also the manager, receptionist and cheesecake chef. The upstart company specializes in New York Style cheesecakes, generated from DeVriend's mother's time-tested recipe. "My mom had the most wonderful recipe for cheesecake. I never realized how many people liked it. I thought there might be a market for it," DeVriend said. Depending on the day, DeVriend bakes between three and 50 cakes, delivering them to restaurants throughout Roseville, Granite Bay, Rocklin and Lincoln. "This is the most fun thing I've ever done," DeVriend said. "The best part is delivering them and watching people's faces." And her customers can't seem to get enough of her secret ingredient - Quality. "I think that's really what makes the cakes so good, the quality ingredients we use," DeVriend said. "These cakes are great for a holiday dinner or as a gift to a friend." As the Jill-of-all-trades at Beaches, DeVriend also personally delivers her cakes to her customers. And word of mouth has proven to be a powerful advertising tool for the upstart business. "Everyone just loves the cakes. The community has been very supportive, making sure to tell their friends about them," DeVriend said. While most traditional New York Style cheesecake stands firm like a brick of cream cheese (the key ingredient to the dessert), DeVriend's cake allow the fork to slide through easily. "It's the best cheesecake I've ever had," said Troy Feist, founder and owner of Beach Hut Deli in Granite Bay. "The product is amazing, there is nothing else like it on the market." Beach Hut has tested Beaches' cheesecakes in the Granite Bay store and will soon be supplying the Lincoln location with the cakes and DeVriend is hoping to deliver to all 12 Beach Hut Delis in the near future. Another location, Roseville's Morgan Creek Golf and Country Club, was one of the first businesses to take on Beaches' cakes as a wholesale supplier, with DeVriend supplying desserts for many of the country club's special events. Recently, DeVriend added a chocolate mousse cheesecake, with an Oreo crumb crust, rich chocolate filling and a whip cream topping. Some friends at the Magic Circle Theatre, whose kitchen DeVriend claims as her home base, supplied the recipe. "She makes most of our desserts here. They are the best cheesecakes we've ever tried," said Michelle Pabst, director of education and outreach at Magic Circle. "Everything she makes is wonderful." The former homemaker delivers all the cakes by hand or if the order is long distance, by FedEx. The New York styles can come with a wide variety of fruit toppings and DeVriend will add pumpkin, chocolate and blueberry cheesecakes to the menu in November.
