Oakmont's Garcia leads local contingent in Foot Locker West Regional
Six runners from Roseville and Granite Bay will compete in the 33rd annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional today at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Karlie Garcia and Marisa Carino of Oakmont will join Trent Brendel and Katie Mersereau of Granite Bay, Hunter Tyler of Woodcreek and Roseville resident Madison Rawson of St. Francis in the competition.
The top 10 in each race will qualify for the National Finals on Dec. 10 in San Diego.
Garcia is coming off a second-place finish in the Division III race at the CIF Cross Country Championships last weekend in Fresno. She was fourth in the state in Division II as a freshman in 2009, then went on to finish third in the West Regional and 15th in the National Finals.
Valley Christian 91, Laytonville 67 — All 12 players scored for the Lions in their opening-round victory at the Redwood Classic in Boonville. Wright Hagerty scored 14 points, and Levi Hagerty and Jake Sween scored 13 each for the Lions.
Josh Flanagan, Jason Gish and Kris Kobzeff combined for 20 points for Valley Christian.
Woodcreek 48, Paradise 37 — Kayla Gardner scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves advanced to the semifinals in the Whitney Winter Invitational.
Fia Hoskinson scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter as Woodcreek took a 16-3 lead, Sammy Gonzalez made three three-pointers for nine points, and Liz Gehweiler led a defensive charge in the third quarter, when she scored five of her seven points.
Loder (11-0) is named Wrestler of the Week
Granite Bay High School graduate Ryan Loder was named Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after winning the 184-pound division at the Northeast Duals in New York.
Loder led the University of Northern Iowa with a 3-0 record during the competition and improved to 11-0 this season, according to www.unipanthers.com. Loder registered a major decision, a pin and defeated ninth-ranked Ben Bennett of Central Michigan 3-1.
