Oakmont tops Granite Bay in soccer, softball
Oakmont High School scored two goals a minute apart late in the second half and defeated host Granite Bay 2-1 on Tuesday in girls soccer action.
Granite Bay senior Brigid Lummis, who signed a national letter of intent with Sonoma State last month, scored in the first half, and the Grizzlies (1-1) led deep into the second half until Oakmont’s Katie Carte put a deflection into the net with about 10 minutes left.
Sara Westcot scored about a minute later, and the Vikings wrapped up a win in their season opener with strong defense and the goalkeeping of Ashley Rominger, who coach Sondra Myles said had at least six big saves.
“She had a fantastic game,” Myles said. “It was a long seven minutes … to finish up. We talked about this preseason, (that) we can be the underdog but we have to play the complete 80 minutes, and that’s what the girls did. They didn’t give up.”
Roseville 4, Casa Roble 1 — Sophomore Carlie Reader had a hat trick and junior Hayley Barnes scored once as the Tigers won their season opener.
Oakmont 1, Granite Bay 0 — Lara Lema drove in the only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and left-hander Savannah Loomis pitched a shutout for the Vikings.
Granite Bay 194, Del Campo 249 — Brandon Baumgarten shot a 1-over-par 36, Zack Kwan a 38 and Bryan Wise a 39 as the Grizzlies began defense of their CIF state championship with a victory over the Cougars at Granite Bay Golf Club.
