Oakmont High School recorded its first Capital Valley Conference football victory by beating Bella Vista 27-20 on Friday night in the Vikings’ last home game of the season.
“Any win right now, I’m ecstatic,” Oakmont coach Tim Moore said. “This was an interesting week for us as a group, as a team. We’ve been talking all year about lack of focus, not executing, and it all boiled down to not coming out here as a team and playing together.”
Oakmont (2-7, 1-3 CVC) and Bella Vista were tied 13-13 until a 34-yard touchdown run by Adrian Williams gave the Vikings a 20-13 edge with nine seconds left in the third quarter.
Oakmont made it 27-13 on a one-yard run Ryan Shields.
The Broncos scored on a last-ditch effort with one minute remaining.
“Obviously, we had our moments where we didn’t execute when we wanted to, but we did execute as a team and together,” Moore said. “That’s big for us. Now, they kind of get a feel for that, so hopefully, we’ll end the season on the same note next week.”
The Broncos (3-6, 1-3 CVC) scored first midway through the first quarter, but Oakmont wasn’t far behind as Shields threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Justin Caliste with 5:24 left in the period. Bella Vista’s Derek Beyer made a 37-yard field goal to give his team a 10-6 lead.
The Shields-Caliste combination struck again in the second quarter, this time on a 29-yard toss for a 13-10 Vikings edge.
“I just try to come out here and do my best every night,” Caliste said. “I don’t plan on scoring. I just try my best to try and come out and do what I can for my team. Good things happen when we work together as a team.”
Another field goal by Beyer tied the score at 13 with 2:36 left in the third quarter.
Shields completed 8 of 10 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
“We did know coming in that we needed to throw the ball against these guys,” Moore said. “We felt that we could throw against them, and that was definitely a focus for us.”
Oakmont finishes the season at Rio Linda next week.
