Oakmont High School earned its first Capital Valley Conference win in front of the home crowd with a 41-14 rout of Bella Vista on Friday night.
Trailing the Broncos (4-4 overall, 1-2 CVC) 7-0 in the first quarter, the Vikings (3-5, 1-2) answered with a 63-yard touchdown run by senior Justin Hyde and a four-yard run by senior Caspian Hamric in the second quarter. The Vikings led the rest of the game.

Later in the second quarter, the Vikings picked up a big touchdown when junior Justin Holmes returned a punt for 67 yards for a touchdown.

Bella Vista scored its second touchdown late in the second quarter, but Oakmont shut out the Broncos in the second half.

Senior quarterback Taylor Laird threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Issac Thornton, and Oakmont’s other four touchdowns came on the ground, including a 20-yarder by Laird with five minutes left.

“Tonight was about all three phases of the game, playing the game that was meant to be played and executing it well,” Vikings head coach Tim Moore said. “Our offense scored, special teams scored, and our defense scored. We’ve been preaching all year that … this is what the result can be.”

Senior running back Robert Walton also ran for a touchdown. He ran in from the 6-yard line early in the fourth quarter.

Hamric echoed Moore’s comments and said the team worked as a unit to earn the win.

“When the scoreboard shows that it’s 41-14, it means we worked hard from Monday to Thursday, and it showed tonight,” Hamric said.

With a needed conference win, Oakmont hopes to make a late run toward the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

“Tonight was just the first step,” Walton said. “We beat BV. We have Rio Linda and then Casa (Roble). This is just the first step to the road to the playoffs. We’ve got to get through this.”

Oakmont plays at CVC co-leader Rio Linda (7-1, 3-0) next Friday.

Oakmont’s junior varsity triumphed over Bella Vista 22-7 to snap a five-game losing streak.
